To marry or not to marry

Hello people of God,

This is a reply to our last post. If you haven’t read it yet, you should hold on and click here to read first.

Is it okay to marry a Muslim?

This question sparked a stream of conversation from those who saw reason with people that might consider it to those who were outrightly against it. Where do you stand? This is what God says:

'Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?'
                                                                                                                                                2 Cor 6:14

Well, the bible clearly says no but what if he/she treats you better than that Christian Brother or sister?  We need to come to understand the fact that we are not marrying religion but character. Hold up! This doesn’t mean I’m endorsing it – Just read to the end.

Let's face reality though - as guys, you want to be respected and as ladies you want to be loved first of all. This is usually the first thing you get attracted to in a person of the opposite sex. There are specific qualities you admire as an individual and these also fuel the attraction usually before you get to the 'religion' base. There are certain 'Christians' who are monsters so to speak but hide under the cover of that title. One thing we should understand is that just because the other person is Christian doesn't give them access to your mind based on the Jesus connection. You still need to talk, let them know how you feel tell them what you think is okay and what isn't because lack of communication is one major cause of failed relationships. It seems easier to communicate with someone of a different background or faith because we actually take time out to explain certain things to them that we assume 'same faith partners' know.

Back to the issue, is it okay since we're talking about character here? I have just three things to say.

1.       You're not just marrying the man, you're marrying his family
The thing most single people fail to realize is that marriage is not just you and him or you and her. As much as you are on your own, we are in Africa. The extended family is a big part of marriage therefore their opinions about you matter to a large extent. This is not to say that they would form the basis of your decisions but I like to say that forever is a VERY LONG time so you don't want to get on their bad side if it can be avoided.

2.       You need to have the same basic value system with your spouse
Raising kids in this day and age is tough enough without the parents having extreme opinions about basic things. The couple needs to have one stand on a lot of issues and if the core of your value system is Christianity then you can't have the same value system. There's that tendency to water the truths of scripture, which you believe, down just so you won't offend them. Where does that leave your kids? The differences can even become a hindrance in your personal walk with Christ. God has chosen you for a reason. Are you going to be able to fulfill it?

Gen 18:19
''For I have chosen (you), so that (you) will direct (your) children and (your) household after (you) to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for (you) what he has promised (you)."

3.       You need to redefine character
Character is the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. As wholesome as this sounds, there is something missing - not to go all spiritual on you but the God in you isn't the god in them. A Muslim man is allowed to marry a Christian woman because as the head of the home, he decides how the children are raised and you generally can't shake his faith but a Muslim lady can't marry a Christian guy for about the same reasons - that's raising another generation without Christ. The Jesus in them factor is very crucial to developing character. Character is built based on background and circumstances but what if the situation changed, would his/her character change?

At this point, some might say 'I'm not marrying her/him, we're just dating', and my question is 'To what end'? You're compounding your problems because when you eventually start dating that good Christian girl and there's something the Muslim did that she didn't do, then you have a basis for comparison. It's not like she's not treating you right but as much as she makes up in other areas, there's that one thing she doesn't do! Don't worry about time - that's the issue most Christian girls (or generally African females) are faced with when it comes to marriage. This brings me to 'Are Christians allowed to date?', but we would tackle that in another post.

On a lighter and slightly related note, everyone should see the movie 'Too Saved'.

In conclusion, prepare to be the right person first - It's easier to find the right person that way because unlike the laws of nature - Like poles CAN attract.

What do you think?

To boo or not to boo

*in Shakespeare's voice* To boo or not to boo - that is the question!

Please read, digest and COMMENT!!!

I need your advice

I'm going to tell you a little bit about TJ. He's very hard working and he makes sure we talk everyday. We're not officially a couple but we've gone for lunch together a couple of times. He's well respected in his firm and he's very close to his family as well - His mum is just amazing! She treats me as one of her daughters - In fact she treats all the family's friends as family. And his two sisters are good friends as well. How we bonded I dont even understand but I'm loving our relationship. Still TJ and I are not dating. I know he has strong feelings for me - We've been friends for a while and he's told me a couple of times that he's willing to wait until I'm ready. He listens when I talk and he encourages me to do my own thing - yet when I do something I probably shouldn't have, he tells me. I like the fact that he isn't afraid to tell me when I'm wrong but he doesn't force his opinions down my throat and in certain cases, we've agreed to disagree and its not a national issue. I'm not still hurting from past relationships, far from it! I have those scars as a proof of victory!
I'm not looking for a Mr Perfect because from all indications, TJ has his flaws but is as close to it as they get.
So what is the problem you ask? Why haven't I said yes since I think I'm ready?

Well, its just that as a young Christian lady trying to do the right thing, I don't know if I should date him.

You see Mr Tijani Ahmed is Muslim.

What should I do?

Well, waiting for your comments!
P.S. Youth retreat is at Living Word Camp Ibeju Lekki!

How far is too far?

Hello everyone. Hope you are having a great week.
Sorry for the long break in transmission. By God's grace, there will always be something in this space to bless you. Enter your email and subscribe before you leave!

That said,

Welcome to the month of August!

I was talking to a few people the other day and this topic came up. I know it has been hammered on over and over again about boundaries during dating - sorry courtship (I read or heard somewhere that Christians don’t date. They court *lips sealed*).
Anyway, the ultimate NO SEX hurdle is clearly not to be crossed but then Christians always shy away from the 'How far is too far' question so along life's way I've learnt a few things. If you’re married, don’t run off just yet. Read to the end and let us single people know what’s up – You never know who needs the tip!

Okay back to the matter. I’ve had friends who say they don’t want to marry ‘church girls’ because they would get bored in their marriages. I mean FOREVER is a VERY LONG TIME!!! Yet they want that woman that they know can keep their homes in order because she’s praying even when they are not. (You had better pray too or else we sef we no dey marry -_-). This eventually leads to some of them ‘dating’ the ‘world girls’ and marrying the ‘church girls’ while others find out that ‘world girls’ are not that bad – At least they go to church.

Disclaimer:
This categorization is just for emphasis. There are no particular characteristics linked to them.

Every female at a certain point in her life craves male attention, the question now is WHERE and WHEN to draw the line! This has led to the birth of the Technical Virgin. The technical virgin is someone who believes in abstinence but allows loopholes in their physical relationships. I remember reading a book with this title a long while back. My question now is who is a virgin really? Is it okay to do everything but sex? Is it staying away from kissing? Does masturbation count? What is virginity really?

Well, the dictionary with me at the moment defines it as not having had sexual intercourse, innocent, pure, chaste, unsullied, untouched and new. I'm pretty sure some of us are cringing right now with those definitions and asking yourselves 'Am I/Was I really a virgin?'

Before you go all Christian ninja on me, I’m not saying go have sex with every Tom, Dick and Harry or feel free to have kids with Jane, Nina and Terry before you're married but all I’m saying is YOU draw your boundaries. Christ says sexual intercourse is not just physical, it’s mental first. So whatever makes you go to that place mentally, stay away.

'but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.'
Matthew 5:28

Some of us actually like to tempt temptation - If kissing your fiancĂ© is fine for you, then who am I to stop you. On the other hand, if a hug is too much, please don’t hug. Your standard is Christ not the couple next to you!

Consider your partner as well biko. You can’t be comfortable alone. It’s a two way street. Someone told me that I should not worry about him and girls because he knows his limit. What if one day she doesn't care about your limit anymore? More often than not, if the girl really wants to DO, it’s only God that can give you limit once you start!

Remember one of the secrets to a successful relationship is compromise. The first is God as the foundation - Don't forget that! Don’t cause your partner to sin or God would hold you responsible.
Ghen Ghen!!!

Don't get it twisted virginity is NOT purity! Still I wonder how you keep things spicy in a relationship since it seems like there are so many rules, and make that someone feel they are special.

We'll do that another time but for now, What do you think?

Your Wedding is Next on the line!

     Yes!

I’m talking to you - the Singles in the house. You are next on the lineJ! I know Ejiro    Ijaola (a.k.a. Kolo for Christ) will yell at this mail with a large ‘YES O!’ when he sees it! His wedding comes up on the 2nd of October, 2010. But who says yours can’t come before then? Huh?... Would you like to PROVOKE our God into it?

It’s ok to be afraid to take the bold step, but don’t tarry in that fear for too long. If you ask those that have gotten married, they will tell you there is always a time when you develop cold feet…even a few days to the ‘D-day’.  You will be wishing you had a muse or genie or even an Oracle to tell you what the future holds with the choice you are about to make…looking for the answers to all the ‘What if's’  that are plaguing your mind…LOL!

Here is a thought pattern I would like to share:

“…I know that there is no need looking for the ‘perfect’ one,
Because I will never find one
Even if I find a perfect one, because I’m not perfect myself,
Then there is still work to be done…
But I know that the Lord has deposited some gifts in me…
One of such is the ability to make imperfect become perfect.
The more I stir up this gift, the better I become for my spouse…until the perfect day!
If Jesus died for her and she knows it, then she’s worth the try…
Unless she’s someone whom I cannot love…”

Our baby girl, pretty Ronke Ibironke (Nee Adedeji) sends her sincere and heartfelt gratitude to all those who made her day memorable. Indeed, it’s the Lord's doing and your prayers & good wishes did not go in vain. God bless you all!
Thank youJ!
