I've come to realize that a lot of people know reasons to
get married (probably from attending weddings like me and listening to the
sermons) mainly categorising them into COMPANIONSHIP, PROCREATION and OBEDIENCE
TO GOD's COMMAND.
Well I decided that we should look at some reasons NOT to
rush to the altar. Wait first, these are not reasons to discourage you from
getting married but are some wrong reasons people get married.
*insert grin of mischief smiley here'.
(Forgive my clumsy arrangement of speech bubbles but I know you'll get the point! *wink*)
(Forgive my clumsy arrangement of speech bubbles but I know you'll get the point! *wink*)
Now that you've dropped your knives and cutlasses and
whatever else you had prepared to kill me with, sit back, relax and be blessed!
1) CONTRACT
There's of course the obvious contract marriages - for green
card or for business relationships between two families and you'd most likely
know what you're doing if you get yourself into that kind of marriage but
that's not my focus in this category. Don't get married because you look good
together. As silly as it sounds, many
people ignore the many cracks in their relationship because from outside things
look pretty good - everyone says they look good and they are a good fit and
both of them happen to be ready for marriage so why not? This is one of the
most dangerous kinds of marriages in my opinion because both parties have
somewhat deceived themselves into believing that things are great and then when
the ground begins to break because of a shaky foundation, all members of your
supporter's club will be nowhere to be found.
2) HOLD THEM DOWN
This one is tricky to explain. It's very easy to get the
wrong interpretation. Receive revelation in Jesus name!!! Well, this reason is
simply, 'I don't want anyone else to marry them before I come back from
wherever'. If that is your reason, then I'm sorry for you. If it's that easy
for her to move on from you and MARRY, then maybe she may not be totally
satisfied by you ... But then again that's just an opinion.
3) THE BEST OPTION
I know that eventually we all have to make a choice but I
feel like if I marry you by a process of elimination not because I want to
choose you then there's a problem. What happens when I find what I'm looking
for - Maybe by then I'd have grown in love with you. But what if I haven't?
This reason creates a lot of questions opening room for doubt. When you're
choosing her or him, CHOOSE! Don't just take whatever's left.
4) I'M AT THAT AGE
You might be at the age but are you at the stage? Marriage
is forever - Don't worry about your age. You need to be prepared mentally not
just ''age-ally'' because when it's going to overwhelm you or toss you around,
it won't care whether you're 16 or 60!
5) THE FEELING OF
LOVE
Ever heard that love is that feeling that you feel when you
feel something you've never felt before? Well then it means we've felt love a
lot - your first heartbreak, your first bruise, the first time you got that
feeling after you were sooo pressed you ran inside the house to ease yourself
and the list goes on and on. There are many 'feelings that I've never felt
before' and I'll still feel that are NOT love! Bottom line - Love is not just a
feeling. It's a decision. Your partner would get on your nerves and even ride
them sometimes so what do you then when you don't feel love? You decide to
still love. Forgive me if I sound a little naive but it really is that simple. Love
isn't I can't live without you - it's more like I don't want to have to live
without you. If it's just a feeling, then it's not enough.
Recently a friend of mine used this quote and I don't know how original it is or who said it but
'Know the difference between a lady who's not worth it and a lady who's not perfect'.
That's serious food for thought!
So those are just 5 reasons you should not get married.
Now I'm ready for
those that have picked up their axes and cutlasses again.
What do you think?
