Aristotle said,
‘We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act
but a habit’.
What really overwhelms or dominates in an overcrowded market is
excellence! To be excellent is to be the best. I didn’t say be the best in the
world, so don’t go comparing yourself with everyone else in the universe.
Simply be the best of you! Can you do that? Have you done something and then
you ask yourself; “Is this the best I can do?"
You must understand that you are
more powerful than you give yourself credit for – and if you can eliminate
distractions, you will go farther faster than you think.
However, we don’t have to be the best in everything – just the things that really matter. And those things will vary from you to someone else.
Two keys that pertain to you in making sure you do your best are:
1. Being able – the thing you decide to give your best to must be within your capacity to carry out. Don’t go and open a gym place or business when you are the kind of person that needs angel Michael’s trumpet wake up in the morning…lol
Won't you agree that he is able to do what he does? Yes by the grace of God, our one and only teacher and Pastor, Rev Ajibade! |
2. Being willing – the other factor is to have the passion for the job. Don’t go and start fish farming because everybody is doing it, or Mr. Salau made 1 million from it last month.
See how she is not willing to be photographed? Lol |
So challenge yourself this week; pick a task - anything. It should meet the two conditions above – you should be able to do it and it should be something you are passionate about. Then set out with the conscious intention of putting your best to it. Practise it over and over again until it becomes second nature. Viola! Welcome to living the life of Excellence!
Oh yes! Before I forget, Excellence in the Marketplace means more than being excellent. It’s just a step further really but basically the same principles apply.
I would like us to access it by three key questions:
1. Am I an example? - A pattern or model for others to emulate (this exposes your professionalism).
2. What are my ethics? – Do you have a moral standard that shapes your behaviour? (This exposes your personality).
3. Is my work evangelistic? – Whatever it is you are doing, does it motivate people to want to become better, does help the society in anyway or does it draw souls to Christ? (this exposes your spirituality).
Your professional, personal and spiritual life are all the same and should reflect the same pattern of excellence. Excellence is an overall thing. It’s not a half-half life. Do your best!
Finally, one deep secrete (don’t let anyone know I told you
this...). Before I go to bed at night and when I wake up in the morning, I see William
Colgate in my bathroom. When I open my kitchen shelf to grab breakfast, I see
Henry John Heinz. These are famous Christian business people who were faithful
tithers. Some of them grew to paying as much as 90% tithe. So since I want my
name/brand to outlive me or become a household name, this is the path to
follow. You like :-)?
